Chronister 1 Amanda Chronister Dr. Carolyn Lawrence FAS-270 Modern Times Short Paper I can vaguely recall watching Charlie Chaplin films with my grandfather as a small child, at the time I was far too young to understand what was happening on the screen and like most children I simply enjoyed the movements on the screen and the sounds that were coming along with them. Watching Modern Times as an adult the impact of how Chaplin represented what was going on during the nineteen thirties was truly eye-opening to me. While there is a great deal of slapstick comedy, which is present in many of Chaplin’s films, there is also a satire that represents what society dealt with in the nineteen thirties due to the Great Depression and industrialization. For me, one of the biggest symbolisms in the film happened when the speed of the Tramp’s line is sped up and he, in turn, misses one of the plates causing him to jump into the machine to catch it (Stephens, 2011).
