1 Jared Sierra Mrs. DelBene Communications 16 November 2018 Interpersonal Communication and its Effects on the Plot of Films Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange feelings, information, and meaning through verbal and nonverbal communications. This act is prevalent in films and direct the entire plot. The acts committed by characters are dependent on how other characters interact with them. The interaction of characters is further driven by some of the key concepts and theories associated with interpersonal communication. An example film that portrays these concepts is Now You See Me 2. It is a film involving the use of sleight of hand tricks and deception among the the Horsemen, protagonists, and the antagonists. One of the recurring concepts throughout the movie is self-concept. The movie begins with the opening scene of a young Dylan Rhodes waiting for his father to perform his magic trick. His father, attempted to escape a safe that was submerged in a river. After some time, Dylan’s father failed to to reach the surface. This event, the death of his father, impacted Dylan for the rest of his life. In some cases, “witnessing a parent’s death means witnessing the death of a part of oneself” (Umberson). Dylan lost himself after his father’s death and replaced the empty space with a new persona. A persona fixated on avenging his father’s death by going after Thaddeus Bradley, the man he blamed for the accident. Dylan was consumed by his vendetta for

2 30 years and everything he did led to the arrest of Thaddeus. A conversation between Thaddeus and Dylan while on an airplane emphasizes the impact Dylan’s self-concept had over the events of the movie: Thaddeus: “Thirty years, and the greatest long game magic trick ever created. Just to put me behind bars. “ Dylan: “Okay.”
