Part 1: The Unemployment Rate The Employment Situation Summary provides a summary of the unemployment rate for January 2019. The unemployment rate for this month was 4.0 percent. The unemployment rate for December 2018 was 3.9 percent. The unemployment rate in January 2019 was 0.1 percent higher than December 2018. Classifying the data between different categories: Categories December 2018 January 2019 Adult Women 3.8% 3.6% Teenagers 12.9% 12.9% Blacks 6.5% 6.8% Hispanics 4.7% 4.9% White 3.5% 3.5% The group with the most significant change in the unemployment rate was Blacks. Last month, the unemployment rate for Blacks was 6.5 percent, but this month it increased to 6.8 percent. For the most part, the other categories experienced little to no significant change; adult women went from 3.8 percent to 3.6 percent; teenagers went from stayed the same at 12.9 percent; Hispanics went from 4.7 percent to 4.9 percent, and Whites stayed the same at 3.5 percent.
