Media -Of all the media, television has the greatest impact. 98% of Americans have TV -Most Americans use TV news as their primary source of information (even with the internet- only a small #, mostly young people) B. Politics and Media -TV is a great tool for politicians to manipulate because, especially for the news, it relies on sound bites and visual elements to capture the viewers’ attention. -Sound bite is a brief, memorable comment that can easily fit into news broadcasts or political commercial. Just a 5 to 10 second comment. -Politicians are carefully coached by their spin doctors to produce on-demand sound bites which are clear and to the point. -Negative political advertising – discredit an opposing candidate in the eyes of the voters Two types: 1. Attack ads – attacks the character of an opposing candidate (Obama smoking weed) 2. Issue ads – focuses on flaws in an opposing candidate’s position on a particular issue C. TV and profits 1. TV profits are made by selling air time to advertisers
