Ethical Oversight 1 Abstract Over the years law enforcement and the communities have changed. Back in the earlier days the elders in the community would watch over the younger children and police the community themselves, so much that by the time the police would arrive the situation would already be contained. Now things have changed so rapidly to the point where the communities don’t have respect or trust in the police and vice versa. The police are often seen as the enemy and ostracized within the community. The excessive amount of police shootings that have taken place over the years have only caused more distance between the community and the police especially with the minorities. These issues have led to public distrust in the law enforcement community and have caused a public outcry for social justice. This has caused for the use of police worn body cameras, in-depth internal review process, and civil review boards to take over and make sure that the decisions that the officers make on the streets are accurate, regulated according to the Standard Operating Procedures of the department and Use of Force laws guided by the state.

Ethical Oversight 1 In recent years there has been an increase in the amount of police shootings that have taken place. So many to the point where the media has made the communities doubt the level of professionalism and lack of authority they feel the officers should have when it comes down to making decisions of using deadly force. The citizens made the opposing theories that officers needed more training and on lethal and non-lethal deadly force and also different ways to deal with situations dealing suspects that have mental illness.
