It was launched by Soviet Union and was named after the Russian word for “satellite”. Around the time of 1955, the UnitedStates announced that it would be the first country to launch the first satellite it spaces in order tocommemorate the International Geophysical Year in 1957. At that time Soviet Union and United States were always competing in science and technology aspect, so Soviet Union would not step aside this satellite battle. Soon, Soviet Union invested for scientists to create a satellite. However,it took quietly a time in order to finish 3000-pound satellite. So they decided to make a small version based on their large satellite craft. The reason why they were rushing was because Sovietwanted to show their development, show that they were better than United States. On October 4, 1957, the small version which also called Sputnik 1 and weighed 184.3-pound was launched intothe orbit around the earth. The launch of Sputnik during the cold war was unexpected move of Soviet which made United States step in and join the space race.
