Thao Pham HIST 148 Instructor McHale March 11, 2016 The Cold War’s Space Race Battle Sputnik 1 was knowing as world’s first artificial satellite. It was launched by Soviet Union and was named after the Russian word for “satellite”. Around the time of 1955, the United States announced that it would be the first country to launch the first satellite it spaces in order to commemorate the International Geophysical Year in 1957. At that time Soviet Union and United States were always competing in science and technology aspect, so Soviet Union would not step aside this satellite battle. Soon, Soviet Union invested for scientists to create a satellite. However, it took quietly a time in order to finish 3000-pound satellite. So they decided to make a small version based on their large satellite craft. The reason why they were rushing was because Soviet wanted to show their development, show that they were better than United States. On October 4, 1957, the small version which also called Sputnik 1 and weighed 184.3-pound was launched into the orbit around the earth. The launch of Sputnik during the cold war was unexpected move of Soviet which made United States step in and join the space race.
