Six Steps to a Successful Interview 1. Prepare questions prior to interview Review questions for appropriateness/legality Review questions for relevancy to the position description Make sure questions solicit behavioral examples 2. Introduction Reduce physical barriers to communication by reserving a meeting room away from your work space Greet candidate and put them at ease Preview what will happen during the interview 3. Obtain information from the candidate Ask prepared questions Listen for usefulness of responses and ask follow-up questions to clarify facts Take notes either during the interview or immediately following

4. Review and summarize Summarize the information obtained from the candidate in order to verify your thoughts and/or notes Change your notes and/or conclusions where appropriate 5. Give information to the candidate Reinforce the responsibilities of the position Ask to answer any questions Make a note of any questions you could not answer in order to follow- up after researching Ask whether candidate is still interested in the job 6. End interview and describe where we go from here Thank the candidate and end the interview Describe future steps including when you expect to contact the candidate, who will make the contact, via phone or letter, etc.
