This is because as humans we have a longing and need to be accepted or just because we’re too lazy to try and make up our own minds. Bertrum Cates, a character in the book Inherit the Wind, is one person who was not afraid to stand up against everyone and speak his mind. Cates isa schoolteacher who broke the law by teachingevolution to his biology class. the entire town of hillsboro turned their back an him calling him a heathen and god less. He was put on trial there he met a man who was also not afraid to speak his mind either, Henry Drummond his attorney. Cates had someone on his side and wasn’t as hard to stand up against a town and say what he believed. The misconception of the society that you live in shouldn’t dictate how low our integrity towards something is or how less of a person we are just because we are not part of the crowd because as lndividual we are born with the right of having a independent mindset. In life, humans can only grow and learn when they allow themselves to suffer or be uncomfortable. It’s unfortunate that many humans wait for one person to open the door to questions and possibilities. In the play, the collective roles of Drummond and Cates act as a martyr for their community. Becausethey faced the fear and the rejection that many people were not willing to go through to show that it's okay not to think like everyone else does because in the end we arehuman not robot and that comes with a diversity of beliefs and opinions.
