DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD 1 The Defunding of Planned Parenthood Kendra Morisette St. Catherine’s University
DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD 2 Imagine you are thirty-six, and you discover a lump in your breast; the first thing that goes through your mind is the same thing that always goes through your mind when you find something unusual on your body: cancer . It’s essential for you to receive an exam, but you don’t have health insurance . Luckily, Planned Parenthood has services to assist you . Planned Parenthood is one of the largest organizations that offer counseling and health care services for family planning, sexually transmitted disease, and other reproductive problems . In 2016, Planned Parenthood treated 2.4 million patients for various situations; 250,000 of them being men . Online and application services were being offered more often with a 320% increase in online patient services and 1.5 million people were provided with programs in education and outreach (Planned Parenthood) . Planned Parenthood offers plethora of resources to both women and men . They administer STD/HIV testing, birth control, emergency contraception, LGBTQ services (counseling, reproductive health, and education), men’s general health services, pregnancy or abortion services, and patient education . People with and without insurance have the opportunity to take advantage of these services at low costs . Often, providers will offer an even lower-cost for individuals with insurance . For example, an ultrasound for someone without insurance can cost an upward of $300, while at Planned Parenthood your first visit consists of lab work and an ultrasound for only $150 . At both places, insurance will cover the majority of the costs depending on the plan .
DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD 3 Planned Parenthood is tied to social justice because of the ongoing debate of how this organization should be funded . A significant number of people do not understand how funding for Planned Parenthood works; they believe that taxpayers pay for all aspects of women’s reproductive care and that it should not be intended for this purpose . The assistance of Planned Parenthood should not be withdrawn because of misconception of services and misunderstanding of funding . Although Planned Parenthood supports everyone, men and women from low-socioeconomic areas will be especially negatively affected if funding is cut for this organization . People that are unable to afford other providers, and probably do not have health insurance are often provided health care at lower costs from Planned Parenthood .
