DNA Repair Mechanism Repair systems are used to counteract spontaneous and induced DNA damage. Today living systems have evolved to contain many of them. The repair systems are essential for the upkeep of the genetic integrity of organisms and the survival of these organisms. Prokaryotes have one DNA repair system called post replication repair system. Bacteria has one DNA repair system called the E. coli SOS repair system. The post replication repair occurs when damaged DNA bypasses repair and fails to be all the way replicated. The figure below shows when the DNA has a lesion. The DNA polymerase might skip over the lesion which leaves an unreplicated gap on the new strand. For this to be corrected the Rec A protein makes a recombinational exchange happen with the corresponding region of the undamaged parental strand which contains the same polarity. With the undamaged segment of the donor the gap is replaced on the damaged strand. This creates a gap on the donor strand. This second gap is filled by a repair synthesis as the replication continues.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
