I remember learning about this experiment in a previous class. A Class Divided proved to be a life lesson that has impacted not only children, but adults as well. This exercise had the ability to pull out the underlining characteristics that lay dormant in both children and adults. As viewer’s we learn that there was not much of a difference between the third grader’s responses and those responses from the adults that underwent the same exercise within the prison training. Discrimination is real and is does hurt when it is done to you directly. This message resonated through feedback projected by the children, as well as their counterparts that were 30 to 40 years older. As a third-grade teacher, Jane Elliott stated: “if this experiment is not conducted correctly, this can have damaging effect on children.” Unlike adults, children are looking for guidance and understanding for the world around them.
