A Class Divided Discussion 5.2This discussion post is on the movie “A Class Divided” and the ethical issues with this experiment. This movie was about a teacher Mrs.Elliott, that was attempting to educate her 3rdgrade class on the issue of racism on the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed. Her project was to demonstrate to the students how they would feel if they were the ones that were discriminated against. My reaction during the movie wasthat this teacher really was attempting to educate her students about an issue that they may never had been exposed to. These students live in Iowa, they were in a white community, taught by a white teacher and their neighbors are all white. The idea of separating the students by the color of their eyes, something that no one has any control over, was a wonderful way to demonstrate to the students, that the features of an individual do not make up the person’s personality. Mrs. Elliott was teaching an educational course that was new and very different. The students during this exercise almost immediately displayed the behavior of racism, when their eye color was superior, they felt superior, when
their eye color was inferior, they felt inferior. When Mrs. Elliott debriefed the students, they realized how they had behaved and in their adult years were more sensitive to race and discrimination.
