Lessons learnt is a method of documenting the different areas of knowledge gained by a project at the project closeout. Lessons learnt usually focus on inefficiencies, project issues and failures that can be used efficiently into improving existing or future projects. It is also a chance to understand how well the knowledge management tools and processes supported the project from initiation to final closeout. This document consists of lessons learnt from the project ‘Family Vacation – 2016’. This project was entirely initiated, planned, executed, managed and controlled by me, from the concept to the final delivery, along with the help of two other people in certain tasks. Project Specifics: A vacation for 4 people had to be planned and executed by me, for 7 days in Singapore, a country located just off the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia in Southeast Asia. The various parts of the project would include airfare for 4 adults, hotel stays with 2 rooms reserved beforehand, itinerary for the 7 days, directions to different site-seeing spots in Singapore, other attractions within the city, and dining within the city. Since this was the first-time, I was handling a project from its initiation to completion, there were a lot of revisions and corrections that had to be made to ensure the project was going to be a success. Several adjustments had to be made to make sure the project made a smooth transition between the various stages of the processes. The lessons learnt register is documented below will give a better insight as to what went wrong and can be used by anyone who will be dealing with a project of the same kind in the future to make project improvements.

Lessons Learned Initiation Planning Execution Monitoring and Controlling Closing Integration Management The project charter was developed successfully one month before the commencement of the family vacation. The destination, schedule and budget were approved by the Project Sponsor- My father. The project plan was not created successfully as the 4 members involved in the vacation had different ideas on the vacation plan. This was resolved by incorporating some of their good ideas into the project plan. There was a lot of confusion in picking an airline for travel as they hiked the airfare last minute due to the holiday season. Therefore, the budget for the vacation increased. A 5-star hotel was finalized after checking their guest reviews online.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
