BIOL1107L Lab 3: Scientific Sources I Post-Lab Instructions: Provide a typed response to each of the following questions pertaining to the press release assigned. Please use the outline provided on the last page as your answer sheet. Point values are given in parentheses after each question. Points possible: 40 A. Press Release: Are Cats Responsible for Cat Ladies” 1. Based on what you read in the press release , briefly describe in your own words , the results and conclusions, of the research study (3-4 sentences, 4 pts). 2. Based on the press release , write down the following information (4 pts): Journal Title (name of the scientific journal the original research study is published in) Authors of the original research article Year the original research article was published 3 Keywords 3. Who is the author of the press release? Is this person one of the authors on the scientific article? Do you think scientists often write their own press releases for the general public? (3 pt) 4. Who do you think is the main audience of the press release and what is its primary purpose? (2 pt) Using the information from A3 above, find the corresponding original scientific article using one of the databases discussed in class. B. Original Scientific Article: 1. Provide a full reference citation for the scientific article. Use the format shown on page 11 of the lab manual, in the examples of the style we will be using in our lab course. (2 pts) 2. Who is the main audience of the scientific article and what is its primary purpose? (2 pt) 3. The introductions of scientific papers provide necessary background and relevance to an experiment, much like the introductions at the beginning of each of our labs. In your own words , paraphrase the Introduction of the scientific article in a few sentences. Provide an in-text citation (parenthetical) at the end, as described on page 11 of the lab manual. (4 pts) 4. Briefly paraphrase and/or summarize the Experimental Procedures presented in the scientific article, providing another in-text citation as you did previously. How much of this information is also found in the press release? How does the differing amounts of information provided relate to the different audiences of the two pieces of writing? (4 pts) 5. In your own words , briefly describe the Results and Conclusions of the experiments in the scientific article. Provide in-text citations as appropriate. (4 pts)
