Group Activity: Osmosis (Part II) Solutes Blood Cells (mOsmol/L) Blood Plasma (mOsmol/L) Na + 12 145 Cl - 4 105 HCO 3 - 12 24 K + 140 4 HPO 4 2- 40 2 Ca 2+ 0 10 Mg 2+ 30 2 SO 4 2- 20 1 Protein 50 15 1. Average concentrations of impermeable solutes in the blood cells and plasma of mammals are shown in the table above. Are mammalian blood cells in osmotic equilibrium? Why or why not? Yes, mammalian blood cells are in osmotic equilibrium. Although the solutes are different, properties of the solutes do not matter for osmosis. The total solute concentrations of blood cells and plasma are both about 308 mOsmol/L, resulting in osmotic equilibrium. 2. Intravenous therapy (IV) bags at hospitals are generally filled with “normal saline”, which is a 0.9% saltwater solution (9.0g NaCl per liter of water). How does the solute concentration of IV bags compare to the solute concentrations of mammalian blood cells and plasma?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
