ABSOLUTE POVERTY REFERS TO A SITUATION WHEN A HOUSEHOLD CANNOT MAINTAIN SOME MINIMUM STANDARD OF LIVING (WORLD BANK, 1997) ambiguity in the term minimum standard of living on purpose by world bank FROM A HUMAN DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVE, POVERTY MEANS THE DENIAL OF CHOICES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR A TOLERABLE LIFE (WORLD BANK, 1997) ambiguity in tolerable life B. INDICATORS OF POVERTY 1.ECONOMIC INDICATORS GNP gross national product; meaning how many things you produce as a society divided by total population production AVERAGE INCOME problems occur because there are too many extremes and differences, doesnt really mean anything and is misleading 2. SOCIAL INDICATORS LONGEVITY o INFANT MORTALITY RATE number of children who die before reaching age 1 o CHILD MORTALITY number of children who die before reaching age 5 o LIFE EXPECTANCY average life you can expect to live after you are born II. ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE LITERACY RATES in developed, rich, modern nationsliteracy rate is 100% and in others there are illiteracy rates EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS III. STANDARD OF LIVING ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES poor ppl ultimately suffer ACCESS TO SAFE WATER millions dont have drinking water, some countries ration their water PERCENT OF MALNOURISHED CHILDREN OVERALL CONDITION OF THE LIVING UNIT C. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE POOR? 1. APPROXIMATELY 1.3 BILLION PEOPLE MAKE ONE DOLLAR A DAY AND LIVE IN ABSOLUTE POVERTY 2. 950 MILLION (73%) OF 1.3 BILLION POOR PEOPLE OF THE WORLD LIVE IN ASIA 3. SOME 220 MILLION PEOPLE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA LIVE IN POVERTY 4. APPROXIMATELY 110 MILLION PEOPLE IN LATIN AMERICA ARE POOR 5. 120 MILLION PEOPLE IN EASTERN EUROPE LIVE BELOW A POVERTY LINE OF $4.00 A DAY 6. MORE THAN 100 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN POVERTY IN INDUSTRIAL NATIONS (LESS THAN HALF THE INDIVIDUAL MEDIAN INCOME) D. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? 1.
