17 FACTORS AFFECTING EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR (A CASE STUDY OF NATIONAL AIDS CONTROL COUNCIL) 1* SWALEH, Lucy Anisa and 2 Dr. WERE, Susan 1 MSC Scholar, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya 2 Lecturer, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya *Email of corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Organizations are nowadays taking a great look at inventory being the asset that provides a sustained competitive advantage in the business environment. Changes in business environment have led to increased importance of managing inventory. The changes that have brought great concern in the business environment includes an increase in globalization, changing demographic patterns, diversified cultures, changes in the economic variables, changes in sociology and the influx of technology in the global scene. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting implementation of inventory management systems in the public sector. The study used the National Aids Control Council (NACC) as its case study. The specific research objectives of the study were to investigate the effect of resource availability on effective implementation of inventory management systems in organizations, to determine the effect of technology on effective implementation of inventory management system in organizations, to investigate the effect of the government on effective implementation of inventory management system in organizations and to investigate the influence of top management support on effective implementation of inventory management system in organizations. The research study used descriptive in research design and further employed qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The target population for the study was all the 130 employees who work at NACC in the headquarters office. The researcher employed quota sampling technique to select 97 respondents from the target population of the study. Semi-structured questionnaires and structured interviews were used as the instruments of data collection. The responses of the respondents were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The study established that the organization lacked adequate financial resources to implement inventory management systems. The study established that Technology use has led to optimization of production. The study established that Public procurement policy has simplified the implementation of inventory management system in NACC. The study established that Top management officials have a positive direct effect on inventory management system usage.
