How We Make Sense of Five Types of Graphs There are many basic types of graph. The five I’m choosing to look at for this assignment are: pie, line, bar, histogram, and scatter plot. Pie Chart: These graphs offer a picture of the data in proportions. The data is calculated as percentages and then put into the pie chart in sections that are proportionate to the circle as the percent it represents. In the picture below the blue section represents data which made up 60% of the total data, so the blue section is a little more than half of the whole pie. Also, you can see in the picture there is a legend. Normally this would have the label for what each color on the chart represents. A pie chart helps to put the data into perspective based on section size. 60% 20% 15% 5% Pie Chart Line Graph: A line graph is created on a y and x axis. Typically these axes would start at zero. If the graph was relating to years it may not start at zero, since it’s unlikely you’d want to graph a trend from the beginning of time, but it’s important that the axes begin at the beginning of the picture. For example if you wanted to show the relationship between population growth in America and time, you would put time on the x axis, and population on the y axis. You wouldn’t start time at 0 though, because that wouldn’t make sense. You’d need to clarify what time period you’re wanting to show, population growth during the Obama Administration would need to start at 2008, or population growth during the industrial revolution the graph would start at 1790. Line graphs help put the relationship between two things into a picture, for the example of population growth during the Obama presidency we would put time on the x axis and population on the y axis and we would have a line going up/down over those 8 years allowing us to clearly see increases and decreases in population over the period.

Bar Graph: A bar graph is similar to a line graph in that there are two axis, but rather than a line connecting multiple points the data is shown with bars. So continuing with the example of population growth during the Obama presidency from above, you would have the same categories for the axes, time on the x and population on the y.
