STUDY GUIDE # 2 TERMS: Minoans – a Bronze Age civilization which arose on Crete, an island in the Aegean Sea. Myceneans – Greeks who benefited from conquest Knossos - a ruined city on N central Crete; capital of the ancient Minoan civilization. Homer - Greek epic poet: reputed author of the Iliad and Odyssey. He was blind Aegean Sea - an arm of the Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey; a main trade route for the ancient civilizations of Crete and Greece and Rome and Persia Ionian Sea - An arm of the Mediterranean Sea between western Greece and southern Italy. Zeus - The principal god of the Greek pantheon, ruler of the heavens, and father of other gods and mortal heroes. Athena - The goddess of wisdom, the practical arts, and warfare, and the protectress of cities, especially Athens. Poseidon - the ancient Greek god of the sea, with the power to cause earthquakes, identified by the Romans with Neptune. Oracles – fortune tellers, lived in very reclusive places Miletus – Greek city state, birthplace of philosophy Pythagoreans - influenced by mathematics and probably a main inspirational source for Plato and Platonism. Poleis – Greek city-state Tyrants – stages in the evolution in Greek government, under dictatorship. Oligarchy – stage in evolution of Greek government, rule by few (Sparta) Demos – stage in evolution of Greek government, democracy (Athens) Solon – Athenian, known as the father of Greek Democracy and the Law Giver
