Concentration Units Most generally, a concentration unit for a solution is a relative ratio of the following form: solvent or solute of amt solute of amt . Examples include: Molarity (M): mol solute / volume of solution (in L) Molality (m): mol solute / mass of solvent (in kg) Mol fraction (X): mol solute / (mol solute + mol solvent) Key 1 : Concentration units are ratios; thus, any sized solution can, in principle, be considered as long as the specified ratio (the concentration) is maintained. Key 2 : There is seldom a simple conversion from one concentration unit to another; thus, usually one has to “unpack” the unit. E.g., write 0.27 M as 0.27 mols solute / 1.0 L of solution. We then convert one or both of these individual parts of the concentration. Note well that Key 1 & Key 2 suggest that the 0.27 M solution can apply to any sized actual
