Andrade 1 Adriana Andrade Mr. Berge Mythology 4 October 2017 A glimpse of a female’s role in Ancient Sumer was shown in Epic Of Gilgamesh, but there is more to show than harlots, kings being the first to sleep with a bride, or the role of women being to satisfy men. The texts in Epic of Gilgamesh can easily be misinterpreted to mean that women of Sumeria were nothing more than sexual beings and/or property. Shamhat, a main character in Epic of Gilgamesh, brings controversy for the sole reason that she is a prostitute. However, in ancient Sumer prostitution is not regarded as vile or degrading but rather a common profession that many women and men had. Sexuality was actually used as a powerful tool in Mesopotamia and Shamhat used it to entrap Enkidu, an overly strong wildman, and turn him into a civilized person ( Kovacs 1). Sexuality was also used in religion in where sacred prostitutes lived in temples and priestesses would often perform sexual rituals for the gods (Valerie 5).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
