Additional notes regarding entropy that accompany and refer to the text, pp. 96-99 . Configuration: This is a specification of exactly which particles are in which energy levels. Technically, we “distinguish” the particles by defining the exact energy level or state for each specified particle. For example, “particle 1 and particle 3 are in energy level six; particle 2 is in energy level one; etc.” Complexion: In this case, one does not “distinguish” the identity of individual particles; rather, one specifies only how many particles are in each energy level. For example: “There are two particles in energy level six and one particle in energy level one.” The 28 “ways” shown in figure 4.3 of the text are 28 configurations each of which is consistent with 6 U of energy being distributed to three of the Y-type molecules. As shown in lecture, these 28 configurations or “ways” arise from seven complexions. For example, in figure 4.3, #1, #22, and #23 each belong to the complexion described as ‘two
