Hidden Figures EssayQuote: separate and equal are two different things. Just cause it’s the way doesn’t make it right” – Dorothy Vaughan In the movie Hidden FiguresDorothy Vaughan talks about how segregation is still playing a role in America about a hundred years after the Civil War. The Civil War ended in 1865; it ended slavery but did not end racism and segregation. Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, and Mary Jackson are three “colored” women who work for NASA. Throughout the film, they helped the “whites” learn that they are no different them then. It just took some time. Dorothy was someone who felt like her coworkers in particular were against her and
her department. She states, “Separate and equal are two different things. Just cause it’sthe way doesn’t make it right”. She is sayinghow she is the same as everyone else but sheand other Negroes were not being given the same respect and abilities. She claims that just because her ethnicity are not slaves anymore does not mean that they are equal either. In this essay it will discuss the movie Hidden Figures on how it shows that African Americans may be slave-free but they are not segregation free, what it was like to live in the 1960’s as a colored person, and how life has changed since then.
