In response to question# 1 SO115 Women in Society . The Relationship Between Women's Choices and Their Backgrounds Many people think that gender studies involves only the differences between genders, their cross contradictions, and gender based movements. However, the study of genders also involves the study of different intersectional cultural, social, political , and religious backgrounds and belief systems which affect our the choices and decisions we make in our everyday life . Women studies involves the study of the effects of the different factors which affect women's choices. To explain how these factors affect the personality and therefore the choices women make, I will use an example of a Japanese girl " Natsuki" whom I met a year ago at a university in Oklahoma. Natsuki enjoyed a very long hair which she had to tie a little above ground level, she explained that long hair is historically associated with the history of Japanese women whose pictures were depicted in many scripts and books of the Japanese women culture for centuries . Natsuki noticed that American girls in her age tend to think of her hair as "ugly and disgusting", but she understands that her long hair is not just a form of her own beauty but rather a sign of her love to her culture and her ancestors. She also used to wear long sleeved shirts all the time which might be because of some religious of personal beliefs, this act somehow complements her words while in a gathering with some friends, "I think my hair is the most precious and the most beautiful part of me ." Natsuki's choices might reflect the contradictions of the American culture which she was newly introduced to and the Japanese culture which she grew up within. women compete to get. Therefore, the few Japanese women who compete for a long non-died hair have a belief system which is actually calling women world-wide for reflecting their beauty in natural ways, focusing on feminine characteristics of their bodies and at the same time presenting their beauty away from the sexual representation of women .

Backlashes against Women's Gains in Society Backlashes against feminism and against women in society in the 1980's have victimized the liberated movements of American women and the hard won victories women have achieved. Susan Faludi argues in her book Backlash: The Undeclared War against American Women that the mass media and especially Hollywood movies, commercial advertisements, and fashion magazines have been used to support an ongoing war to suppress liberal women's voices . These media supported backlashes operate in two ways; first, the backlashes in themselves serve as an iron fist to change the world view towards women, portraying them heavily in sexual roles, wearing sexy clothes, avoiding their mentalities, and their true life problems.
