Dakiyah BurginPartner: Francine GomezOrganic Chemistry 210 labGrace McMakinSeptember 12 and 19, 2017TITLE: Purification of acetanilide by fractional recrystallization Experiment 2PURPOSE: “To purify acetanilide from an impure mixture by fractional recrystallization from a hot, aqueous solution, and to assay the purity of the recovered acetanilide by melting point determination” (Lab Handout# 2).APPLICATION: According to lab handout #2, recrystallization is described as “the removal of the crystals from the filtrate by filtration, but the soluble impurities and a small amount of the desired substance will stay in the solution (lab handout#2). Recrystallization works when in soluble impurities can be filled out an impure solid is placed in a liquid; after heating for a little while, the solid will dissolve in the solving at increased temperature but when any soluble impurities remain in solution when the solvent is cold. In this case, we used certain solutes to remove acetanilide from a mixture with other solids. Carl and Lebanon Valley College summarize the above information as “determine a suitable recrystallization solvent, and purify the acetanilide using recrystallization” (Carl Wigal, Lebanon Valley College, [updated 2014]). There are qualities that a good solvent must have. They are: the ability to dissolve a reasonable amount of the organic compound at high temperatures usually the boiling point of the solvent; and very low at the temperatures.
