Catalog Description: Students use and perfect their writing skills by conducting research on debatable topics and completing a research project that meets the standards for academic writing. Students receive instruction in developing voice, matching style to audience, the research process, and creating forms that accomplish rhetorical purposes in expository and argumentative writing modes and contexts through drafting and revising. Prerequisite: English 100 Course Objectives: By completing this course the students will be to: 1. Demonstrate writing proficiency through effective argumentative, persuasive, and expository prose 2. Evaluate sources located as part of the research process. 3. Synthesize ideas from multiple sources with appropriate citation and documentation. 4. Critique ideas in argumentative and expository modes and writing contexts. 5. Analyze a topic from multiple perspectives 6. Implement the writing process, which includes multiple drafts 7. Implement the research process, which includes proposal and annotated bibliography 1

Eng 300 Syllabus 2 Grading and Evaluation: Critical Assignment 300 points Group Presentations 100 points Active Participation 30 points Final Reflective Paper 70 points A = 460 – 500 A- = 450 – 459 B+ = 440 – 449 B = 410 – 449 B- = 400 – 409 C+ = 390 - 399 C = 360 – 389 C- = 350 - 359 D = 300 – 349 F = 0 - 299 Any student with a grade below C- must repeat the course. Attendance Policy Statement “Students are expected to attend all classes and participate actively in every class session. At a minimum, students must attend 80% of class time, or s/he may not receive a passing grade for the course. Should a student have extenuating circumstances, s/he should contact the instructor as soon as possible and discuss the circumstances”. Group Projects: You will participate in a group project. Your group will identify a current, controversial, and multifaceted problem or issue in the society and suggest a solution. This will entail and necessitate research on the part of the group members. As members of a group, you will share a common topic or theme and attempt to approach it from different perspectives/viewpoints.
