Module 2 Discussion Project Manager versus Functional Manager “The functional manager is a direct, technical supervisor. The project manager is a facilitator and generalist” (Meredith and Mantel, 2012, p. 104). The authors juxtapose a project manager and a functional manager and the differences in the tasks and requirements it takes to be each type of manager. Meredith and Mantel (2012) describe the progression of most project managers, who were once functional managers. The promotion of functional managers into project management roles, without adequate training, sets project managers (who have only operated as functional managers) up to fail. Often times when working with a project manager, I have found that the project is being managed by someone who only has a functional management skill set. The fallacy that a good functional manager will make a good project manager is one that many corporations fall into (since project management itself is relatively new as a defined role in a company).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
