Week 2 Pre-Class Assignment Onset – This is when the woman is coming closer to term pregnancy. The uterus is becoming more sensitive and contractions are becoming more frequent and more intense. Stages of Labor: First stage – This is cervical changes, and it is composed of three phases. Which are latent, active, and transition. It starts with the onset of true labor and is completed when the cervix is dilated to 10 cm. Stage 1 is the longest stage and usually lasts 12 hours. Second Stage – This is when cervical dilation is complete and is at 10 cm. The stage is complete once the baby is born. Typically this stage lasts for 50 minutes for primigravida’s and 20 minutes for multigravidas. Also woman may have the urge to push once baby has reached the pelvic floor. Third stage – This stage begins immediately after delivery of the baby and involves the separation of the placenta from the uterus. This process usually takes 5-30 minutes after delivery and happens spontaneously. Fourth stage – This begins after the placenta has been delivered and ends within 4 hours with stabilizing the mother. This stage also begins the postpartum period of labor. Cardinal movements – Engagement happens when the fetal head passes through the pelvic inlet. Descent is movement of fetus through the birth canal during the first two stages of labor.
