LECTURE ONE: Confederation 1867 Vancouver becomes a city in 1886. Vancouver draws newcomers to the city who are interesting in the growing resource extraction industries. Gastown sawmills helped to spawn a commercial zone along Hastings Street Main and Hastings was the original core of the city Woodwards department store draw economic activity to the Hastings/ Cordova corridor 1903 marks the construction of Woodwards and the Carnegie Library, named after the American industrialist Andrew Carnegie who provided $50,000 for the project The streetcar (interurban) system provided a steady flow of potential customers as well as the number of hotels/bars which catered to the resource workers In 1958 the streetcars ceased operating in the area. Soon after the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library moved to Burrard and Robson.
