Lab 5: Carbon Dioxide In Pond Water Summary In this lab we measured the carbon dioxide level in a pond by looking at photosynthesis of plants, and the breathing activity of animals in the pond. We looked at the rate of carbon dioxide entering and exiting the pond by examining a graph of the rate of Carbon Dioxide in the pond. We found the area under the curve by using Left Hand and Right Hand sums and estimated the level of Carbon Dioxide throughout one day. Answers 1. Interpret the fact that the rate is negative for 0 < t < 12 and positive for 12 < t < 24 in the context of C02 levels. Between 0 and 12 the carbon dioxide rate is negative because the rate at which the plants are taking carbon dioxide out of the water is greater than the rate at which animals are putting carbon dioxide in the water. It is positive from 12 < t < 24 because both the plants and animals are putting carbon dioxide into the water at night. Justification
