Chapter 11: Organized Crime, Corporate Crime, and Cybercrime Organized crime and corporate crime are typically committed by powerful and influential groups or individuals. Cybercrime: used to just be hackers acting out for mischief but now is often part of a larger criminal conspiracy which sophisticated criminal groups carry out. o Any crime that involves the use of computer technology or the internet. o Because of the status these groups can hold, the impact of these crimes can be costly in human terms and financial. o Can also have transitional dimensions, which makes them difficult to combat. Organized crime: illegal activity conducted by individuals or groups acting in consort, typically involving extortion, fraud, theft, smuggling, or the sale of illicit products. o Piracy: one of the earliest examples of organized crime – i.e. Vikings were known to practise acts of piracy throughout France, Scotland, England, and Ireland.
