Introduction: Kaylena Flynn-Rizk Topic of interest: Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in a group. Asch wanted to investigate the extent to which social pressure from a majority group could affect a person to conform. Asch went off of Sherif’s (1935) conformity experiment where there was no correct answer to the ambiguous autokinetic experiment. Asch believed that in order to be sure that a person conformed there must be a correct answer. Wanted to investigate the effects of conformity to a majority when the task is unambiguous. Research question: The purpose of the experiment was to find the answer to the question: “How and to what extent do social forces constrain people’s opinions and attitudes?” Details: The experiment consisted of one subject and 7 other participants who were assistants of the experimenter. The subject was told that they were participating in a vision test, where they had to match lines. The other participants gave correct answers at first but provided incorrect
