In the mid-1930’s, Judith Deutsch, an accomplished swimming champion was breaking the all Austrian women’s middle and long distance freestyle records. In her early years, Deutsch was prohibited from joining most athletic clubs in Austria due to her Jewish background. In no way crestfallen , Deutsch was determined and eventually was able to join a Jewish athletic club. In no time she was winning swim meets and was setting national records. Her success even caused her to be elected "Outstanding Austrian Female Athlete of 1935" by the Austrian Sports Authority and be awarded the “Golden Badge of Honor” in 1936.
