Chapter 4 Assessment Rayyan Islam Period 1 Vocabulary: 1. The mass of matter per unit of volume is density. 2. The upward force exerted by a fluid on an object submerged in the fluid is called buoyancy. 3. The idea that the buoyant force exerted on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object is known as Archimedes’ principle. 4. The force exerted on an object by the gravity of Earth is called Weight. Concepts: 1. Both one gram of Steel or Aluminum have the same weight. 2. One gram of Steel has a higher density than one kilogram of Aluminum. 3. One gram of Aluminum has a higher volume than one gram of Steel. 4. Three units that can be used to represent density are kg/m3, g/cm3 or g/ml. 5. a. The solid phase generally has the greatest density. b. The gas phase generally has the lowest density. 6. This affects life in a pond over a long, cold winter because a sheet of ice layer is formed on water during winter and below there is liquid water so life can still live and not become frozen.
