14 Up in America 12/10/2007 There are many subtle as well as large differences between the two age groups. When the children were 7 they were much more outgoing. They seemed like kids on camera; bold, energetic and outright. When they are being filmed at age 14 the children were more reserved and calm. During these segments the film emanated the awkwardness that these children felt because they had become more self-conscious, especially when the subject of dating comes up. The teens are also more aware of the camera, when they are 7 they are not as aware of the camera and their responses are more straightforward. The 7-year-olds also reflect Piaget’s theory of Moral Reasoning and they display the stage of Heteronomous Morality. This is when children think that justice and rules as divine and unchangeable. This is probably best illustrated when 7-year-old Selena says, “My parents said that if I don’t do well in school I will become homeless.” In this case justice is manifested in Selena’s parents.
