Applying an Ethical Theory 2 Part 1: Ethical Question Are there certain circumstances or criteria that make a war just or unjust? Part 2: Introduction War is a timeless beast. As long as there has been people with different ideologies and moral and ethical compasses, war has existed. War is often the bloody answer to conflicting views. It should be the last resort in some situations, but this is not always the case. There are two sides to this issue, as there are with most. Realism is defined as justifying war and achieving success at minimal cost (Thames 2018). Pacificism encompasses the philosophy that war is immoral under any circumstances (Thames 2018). However, many believe that war can be justified by the Just War Theory. Jus ad bellum determines if conditions justify going to war (Thames 2018). Jus in bello defines justified conduct or behavior within the war or justice within the war itself (Thames 2018). There are six
