Seminar in Sociology: Language, Identity, & Thought Term Paper 11/5/17 Focusing on a Social Identity: I will be looking at the case of Asian women being with white men and Asian men being with white women. Interracial relationships vs. Intra-racial relationships I will be discussing how gender and race play a part in interracial dating. Marked - interracial relationships in America between Asians and Americans Unmarked- intra-racial relationships between Asians in America The term Asian is defined by the Census Bureau as encompassing a broad group of people who include the Far East, Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent, including countries like Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, and Vietnam. Answer the following questions in your term paper. (a) Discuss the semiotic asymmetry underlying the relation between is marked and unmarked forms, thereby examining the relation between specialness and ordinariness as manifested in the way collective attention and semiotic weight are culturally distributed. (the use of language in marking interracial dating). Marked: interracial relationships Unmarked: intra-racial relationships in America Semiotics is the study of words or signs and tries to look for reasons why we come up with symbols. For instance, interracial dating such as a Korean dating a German is marked in America; however, a Korean dating a Chinese is unmarked in America. / (b) Discuss the special role of language in marking social identities, paying particular attention to the tension between labeling and cultural visibility as well as cultural “invisibility. In simple terms, invisibility and visibility are seen in the mainstream. European Americans are more visible, while minorities such as Asians, Blacks, and Latinos are invisible in interracial dating. (c) Examine the role of default assumptions in the way the unmarked form of this identity is socio-mentally processed.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
