UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA NORWICH BUSINESS SCHOOL UG Coursework 2018-19 MODULE: NBS- 5004Y COURSEWORK Question: George and Saskia have bought an old farm building near the Norfolk coast, which they are converting into a restaurant. They hope to attract custom from local residents and visiting holiday-makers. George invited quotes from five local builders to upgrade the kitchen and dining area. One of these builders was James Handyman who sent a comprehensive quotation, including terms and conditions, stating “If I hear no more from you, I will commence work on 27 January.” George decided instead to use a builder called Andy Slick, who had been recommended by a friend. He accepted Andy’s quote and Andy commenced work on 20 January. George did not reply to the other builders who had provided quotes. On 27 January, James Handyman arrived with his tools and apprentice to commence work, and was surprised to find the work already started by his competitor Andy. He called George a time-waster and threatened to take him to court for breach of contract. Andy has now completed the work and George is pleased with it apart from one important detail. Andy has fitted a cooker with an induction hob, and not the gas hob specified by George. Andy says it is far better than a gas hob and the suppliers are refusing to exchange it. He has sent George an invoice for the full amount of his quotation, which George is refusing to pay as the work has not been completed to his satisfaction. In March Saskia commissioned an interior designer called Lawrence to complete the interior décor of the dining area, which he agreed to complete by 5 June. Saskia and George agreed a lucrative contract to cater for a large wedding party on 10 June. Towards the end of May, Lawrence emailed Saskia to tell her that he was behind schedule and would not be able to complete the work until mid-July at the earliest. Saskia and George were very worried about losing custom over an important month of the tourist season and, in particular, about losing the wedding contract. This would cause them to lose money and damage their reputation. Saskia agreed to pay Lawrence an extra £1000 in order to get the work done by the original deadline. He completed the work on time and the wedding event went ahead as planned. Saskia has paid Lawrence the amount originally agreed but is refusing to pay the additional £1000.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
