INTRO: Pharmaceutical companies have started a new trend of over pricing life saving drugs. Pharmaceutical companies should not be able to over price these drugs because by doing this they are increasing healthcare costs to the system because consumers are no longer taking their medication, consumers will turn to alternatives like acquiring their through an illegal sources, and most importantly per the constitution all have the right to live. MAIN POINT 1: If pharmaceutical companies continue to over price drugs consumers will be forced to no longer take their medications which will in turn increase healthcare costs to the system. An example of this would be a drug called Daraprim; this drug is used to treat a parasite infection related to HIV that can potentially cause life threatening health problems. When Daraprim was acquired by Turing Pharmaceuticals the company “ immediately raise the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50” (Pollack, 2015). The increase in price on this drug increased the annual cost of medication for some of these consumers by hundreds of thousands of dollars. The average American cannot afford an increase this large in the life saving drugs that they take. When they no longer are able to take their medication because of over pricing they will in turn increase costs to the healthcare system because their bodies will start to deteriorate in various ways so they will begin to make more hospital visits and doctor visits. The increases in these hospital and doctor visits causes costs to the healthcare system to rise disproportionally to the original cost of the drugs. Main point 2: In this debate, my standpoint on if charging high prices for drugs in the united states by pharmaceutical firms is ethical is that high-priced drugs will prompt many people to obtain drugs through illegal means (Hakim, & Ross, 2017) . In order to survive, this will disrupt market order.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
