Journal 2 Mandi McGaha Friday, February 8, 2008 Today we had a test. Monday, February 11, 2008 I had an appointment today and missed class. Wednesday, February 13, 2008 Today we talked about the normal probability function. I thought that it looked pretty nasty and felt kind of like I did in 8 th grade when I began algebra and there were letter in the math I was doing. Big equations can be intimidating, especially when it’s a big equation and the material is new. I hope that as a teacher I can develop activities to ease the anxiety that these equations cause. We used our calculators to evaluate the equation at various values of x and found that the equation produces a symmetric graph. We learned that f(x) is maximized at the mean, and that it is always greater than or equal to zero. We also learned that when we integrate the normal probability function, the area under the curve will always equal zero. I really enjoy Calculus, as sick as that is to some people, so I was glad to see some of it appear in class today. Friday, February 15, 2008 Today we spent most of the class working on one problem. We continued to use some Calculus to do this, but a good majority of the work we did today was done in Minitab as usual. We talked at length about how the probabilities associated with the density function were directly correlated with the area under the curve of the function. We reviewed the empirical rule and talked about what percentages of the data were with in one and two standard deviations away form the mean. I really like that we incorporate so much technology into this class, but sometimes I feel like I would just rather know how to really do this stuff.
