Mandi McGaha LJ#1 This semester I am tutoring in Avery County on Thursday afternoons with the GEAR-UP program. The GEAR-UP program is to aid middle school and high school in academic success. In doing this the hope is that more students will graduate from high school and enroll in and be successful in college. The program strives to make both students and parents aware of what it takes to reach this goal so that everyone is on the same page when we all go home at night. This leads to the need for the tutoring component of the program. College students are not only tutoring students in the GEAR- UP program to help them with their homework, but also to set the example of someone who did work hard and make it to college. Also, by beginning the tutoring and encouraging students to push their limits academically in middle school could give students the extra help they may need in a particular subject before it becomes too big of a problem.
