Ramirez 1Vanessa RamirezProfessor MooreEnglish 102-003January 20th 2019Good Ol’ Toxic MasculinityThe roles of men and women in society have been viewed differently throughout centuries and various cultures. Men are often portrayed as the ‘knight in shining armor’ in literature, media, and myths and legends; on the other hand, women are portrayed as the ‘damsel in distress’. This preconceived notion that men are the superior and stronger gender has been the basis for gender roles throughout cultures, especially in the United States. Boys grow up believing in girls as object for their personal desires, that the gorgeous wife stays at home with the several children while the husband works eight hours a day, five days a week. When they’re teenagers, they’re glorified for body count and being womanizers, swooning teenage girls any chance they get yet have an insane double standard for girls and how they should dress in public and behave. This type of behavior had become increasingly normalized, which would eventually spark several movements for gender and sexual liberation. Teenage men often exhibit sexist objectification of women, and this type of sexism illustrates a naïve and offensive perspective of women that reinforces the stereotypical idea of how nineteen-year-old males view the opposite sex. It is not unusual for teenage men and teenage women grow up completely differently despite sharing the same troubles of physical and mental changes. Nonetheless, girls are held at the much higher standard that they must act mature for their age; meanwhile boys are given the
