Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s is a disease that gradually affects the brain and causes brain cells to deteriorate and die. Alzheimer’s can affect an individual’s memory, behavior, thinking and reasoning functions and skills. The disease worsens until an individual can no longer function or carry out every day tasks on their own. Alzheimer’s is the 6 th leading cause of death in the U.S. Approximately 5.7 million Americans over the age of 65 are currently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Early onset Alzheimer’s affects closely to 200,000 people under the age of 65. Sadly, nearly 16.1 million Americans provide unpaid care for individuals with Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association is an organization that helps educate the public about the disease, assists by providing support groups, forums, information, fund research, provide a voice for Alzheimer’s, and assist in reducing the risk of dementia by providing knowledge to communities. It is a voluntary organization and nonprofit organization. Alzheimer’s Association helps provide care and support to individual’s affect and their families.
