PRACTICE PLAN 4Practice PlanThere are many factors to consider when choosing to become a mental health counselor such as the type of counselor one wants to be, who that person wants to help and why, how she or he can help those people, and much more. That is why having a plan in place as a student of mental health counseling is important. This practice plan outlines a counselor with a desire to help those that have been spiritually abused by high-demand groups or cults. It is important to understand the historical background on cults and the psychological damage they leave in their wake. This helps the counselor to understand her or his client and what therapy process would work best for them. The counselor can also benefit from networking with other group and individual practicesthat also work with this specific group of people. This way, ideals, treatment strategies, research, and more can be shared between therapists to better therapy for clients (Erford, 2014). Along thesame note, it is important for a counselor to have a supervisor or counselor they can consult if there is a question on how treatment should proceed and to help the counselor make ethical and unbiased decisions for treatment. To further aid in the exchange of ideals, upkeep of ethical standards, and access to supervisors and consult counselors, joining certain professional organizations can not only help, but they can greatly contribute to the understanding and ethical treatment of specific groups, such as cult survivors (Erford, 2014).Historical BackgroundCults in the United StatesCults tend to function in the background of society attempting to keep outside focus off them keeping their policies and practices secret to outsiders. This allows them to function on a higher level than society realizes meaning they get away with the psychological trauma they
