In order for clinicians to properly diagnose, it is important to unitize proper assessment instruments to not only find the proper diagnosis, but rule out potential, yet incorrect,diagnoses. There are many assessment instruments available to clinicians, so it is also important to utilize instruments that have a high validity and reliability to increase the accuracy of the information derived from the data collected. This paper will utilize the case study of Derek and what assessment instruments are useful in his dual diagnosis. This means that the clinician will need to be able to utilize proper assessments in order to diagnose both his substance use and mental health issues. This is vital for individual presenting with both considering each treatment plan could possibly depend on the diagnosis of the other. In order to know the best first step for Derek, both aspects of his presenting issues need to be considered.Assessment ToolsBased upon the way Derek has presented in the hospital after trying to start a fight in a nightclub and injuring his hand, then berating the doctor, the doctor had ordered a full assessment, which means a drug test would be done. This is important because even though William knows that Derek is using meth after finding the drug and talking to Derek’s brother about a past episode, it is important to know if he is mixing it with anything. This is also important because as a member of the LGBTQ community, he is more likely to exhibit a higher severity in not only substance abuse but also mental illness (Klein & Ross, 2014).The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) (McLellan, Luborsky, Woody, & O, 1980) is an assessment instrument that is administered through a semi-structured interview that is supposed to take less than an hour for those presenting with a need for substance abuse treatment.
