“Young Goodman Brown” By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Young Goodman Brown does not receive affirmation of his faith as well as satisfaction
and security in his quest of good versus evil. A series of insights and revelations force the young
Puritan to take a good look into his faith and question his beliefs and the Puritan community.
Consequently, this forces him to turn away from his blind faith. Several incidents occur during
his travels into the dark forest, which reveal a lot of truth and consequently this shatters his
Christian beliefs and faith in his community. There are several reasons that support this
conclusion. To begin with, Young Goodman Brown faces a conflict when he decides to leave his
wife, Faith, at home and go into the forest. His wife begs him to put off the journey, but Brown
insists that he cannot afford to miss his journey, even though he feels guilty for leaving her all
alone. When a person believes in seeking the truth and is willing to forsake loved ones in order to
know the truth. It shows that the character is in deed restless and will not stop until they are
satisfied with the outcome.
