Running head: WEEK 5 DISCUSSION 1 Week 5 Discussion: Dementia Student’s Name Institution of Learning Week 5 Discussion: Dementia Dementia is a general term that is used to identify the decline in the human brain functioning. Quite often, such a decline is observed with age and influences one’s memory, judgment skills and consequent inability to perform various types of activities starting from more complicated and finishing with the most simple ones. Alzheimer's disease is the most common example of cognitive skills’ decline. Alzheimer’s disease, is the most common cause of dementia accounting for approximately 60% to 80% of all dementias (Arcangelo et al., 2017). Some other dementia types include vascular dementia, Lewy body or Parkinson disease - caused dementia (Epperly et al., 2017). In additions, some reversible conditions of this disorder are thyroid problems and deficiency of the particular groups of the vitamins.

WEEK 5 DISCUSSION 2 Earlier recognition of dementia contributes to increased effectiveness of the treatment. Its major components must include the patient and family education and counseling, planning of the most effective care, evaluation of the reversible causes of the disorder, and prescribing the corresponding medical therapy (Falk et al., 2018). Careful assessment of the noncognitive symptoms of dementia is imperative in order to first develop an appropriate differential diagnosis and then employ successful treatment strategies (Forester & Oxman, 2003). The optimal goal of drug therapy is to maintain and maximize the patient’s functional ability, quality of life, and independence for as long as possible while minimizing adverse events and cost (Arcangelo et al., 2017). The commonly used drug types include cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine (Epperly et al., 2017). Cholinesterase inhibitors includes donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and
