In Macbeth, the supernatural is what drives Macbeth and sets the dark theme for the story. The supernatural appears in many forms: the three witches, Banquo's ghost, the floating dagger hallucinations and the four apparitions. First I will talk about the witches, which played a huge role in the play. They could tell the future and influence Macbeth. The witches introduced ideas into Macbeth’s head, which caused him to act upon them in an ambitious and tragic way. The witches, in a way, symbolises the devil. Their quote, “Fair is foul, foul is fair,” shows how evil they are. Macbeth often relied on what the witches had to say, however he described them as “instruments of darkness.” The second supernatural element was the dagger hallucination, where a dagger appeared in front of Macbeth prior to Duncan’s murder. The dagger was a object of evil, leading Macbeth to commit the murder. Here, Macbeth is a victim to his illusions as well as being a victim to the witches. These two supernatural elements are influencing
