Surname 1 Name Course Institution Date UC Tuition and Financial Aid When there is an estimation of the cost of college, the University of California makes a consideration to all the expenses related to being a student including tuition fees, housing, food, books, transportation and supplies. However, such a figure which is the entire cost of attending the university does not reflect the exact amount that students pay. This is because more than two- thirds of the undergraduates of the University of California have access to some financial aid, averaging at 16,000 dollars which considerably reduces the total cost of the tuition and fee. For the residents of California, such financial aid meets almost half of the entire cost associated with attending the university for the whole year. This paper would delve into explaining California’s tuition and system of financial assistance and its welfare effects for students and their families and taxpayers. Surname 2 the financial aid programs. California law that had been enacted in 2015 facilitated free first-year tuition. For the four years at the university, 60 percent of the students in the 23 campus of the University of California together with the in-state undergraduates in the ten-campus have benefited from the free tuition ( Johnson, 67). The AB19, a new law in California, has facilitated coverage of the tuition fee for all the students, without having the consideration to the level of their income. There are particular eligibility standards, which are essentially based on income that each student must meet for the University of California to pledge coverage of the tuition cost. An in-state undergraduate at the University of California would have to make mandatory tuition and fees amounting to 12, 630 dollars every year if such a student never qualified for the financial aid ( Johnson, 69). There are particular criteria to be used in the application of the financial aid of the University of California. The first step involves filling of the FAFSA for the documented students and the California Dream Act for the undocumented students ( Johnson, 77). The initiatives of the financial aid in the UC utilises information contained in those forms in establishing the eligibility of a student. Thus it is not necessary for a student to fill different forms for the program application.
