Bailey 1 Broc Bailey Professor Fatima Lim-Wilson English 102 14 March 2019 A Dream Deferred #1 “What happens to a dream deferred?” (Hughes). A dream deferred can either flourish and grow or crash and burn horrendously. The poem Harlem represents the dreams of the protagonist in A Raisin in the Sun. As they can either prosper or die in despair. Dreams deferred do not always mean a failed dream, because of all the educating mistakes and that dreams of a family will prove in the end. The first dream in the play is Walters dream to buy a liquor store and became almost selfish. towards his family. It is selfish towards his family in the way of taking Beneatha’s college money to make his own success. He has some conflict when Mama tells him how she views his opinion. “Oh, so now it’s life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom used to be life, now it’s money. I guess the world really do change” (Hansberry). He struggles with coming up with the finances until Mama gives him a percentage of the insurance money because he is her child metaphorically and realistically speaking. He starts to think he has won the world until his dream blew away, with his partner skipping the country with all the money. This dream deferred conflicts only him, but he makes sure everyone else knows.
